My needs for a riffle are mainly for deer hunting up to 300 yards + and for predation because I have found cougar and bear tracks within 1000 feet of my house.
Thank you

A good ranch and hunting rifle?
September 20th, 2010
Hello:
I just turned 17 and I live on a cattle ranch in Wyoming. I am not a hunter due to school and work around the ranch that keeps me busy but I’ve been around guns most of my life and used .22’s and a 12 gauge shotguns for pest control. Now it’s time to get some hunting in and wanted to know what would you recommend as a high powered hunting rifle? I’ve reading ans researching a lot online and got it down to two rifles after many hours of research. The first one is the Remington 7mm magnum or a Winchester Black Shadow 30-06.
My needs for a riffle are mainly for deer hunting up to 300 yards + and for predation because I have found cougar and bear tracks within 1000 feet of my house. Thank you Corey

Winchester 70 featherweight or Ruger 77 for a Big Game hunting rifle enough? I have been looking at the Model 70 Featherweight and the Ruger 77 CR MK II COMPACT. I have been looking around at hunting rifles for deer hunting in open fields and possibly thick brush, I have found a caliber but I have not really found a gun. The rifle will be used by my 15 year old grandson, he has shot lots of guns but I want to get him a gun that fits him now but he will have for a life time.
Thanks all and I am leaning towards the M70 Featherweight in 7mm/08. But if any hunters on this blog have any suggestion or advice it will be well received. Kind regards, Jeff Aug 2010
A new hunters question
August 18th, 2010
Okay, where to start? I just turned 16 and all my friends hunt and brag about it in school and well my father has not been around for some time now and my only Uncle thinks hunting is cruel and thinks guns are dangerous and for fools. I have almost no experience with hunting accept my gamo pellet rifle. I have shot a 410 shotgun, and a .22lr. My mother is tired of me bugging her about getting a hunting license and has agreed this year I can get one. My question is where to start after that? I have a good budget for a deer hunting rifle (Remington 700 BDL) and a scope, but I don’t know how to start process on where to hunt? ..Thanks for any advice.

Hog hunting rifle needed
August 12th, 2010
I am primarily a bow hunter, but I am looking to get a rifle to go hog hunting at my ranch. My ranch (West TX) is just overrun with feral hogs and I need a simpler method to dispatch them then your normal stalk bow hunting techniques. There is just not enough time in the day and heat to get their numbers down to a manageable level. I’ve read that the .308 is a great caliber for hog hunting and affordable. So I need to know what brand and type of gun I should get with a budget of $300? Also if you do not prefer the .308 for hog hunting what would you prefer? Lastly, I need a rifle that will shoot out past 150 yards plus. These hogs have got too smart to sneak up on any closer. Larry Aug 2010
Big Game rifle and scope suggestion
August 4th, 2010
![]() New to this blog and I am looking for a Big Game rifle and scope suggestion or a rifle and scope under $750? Is it possible and have my eye on a savage 7mm so please let me know what you think and why? I would like to find one with a camo stock but have not seen one in this price range. Is a realtree camo stock needed if I will be primarily hunting deer in Texas? I want to go with the 30-06 because I want to hunt bigger game also.
Thanks for your opinions in advance, TC
