Looking for load suggestions,
Oct 2010Handgun deer hunting
October 1st, 2010
Hey all thought I would ask if there are any handgun hunters here? My question, looking for load suggestions for deer hunting using a 357 magnum? I will be using my 357 magnum ( 6 1/2″ revolver) for deer hunting this season. Some say that the load is too light for deer but the longest shots would be 45 yards at best, and my red dot scope does well out at that range.
Looking for load suggestions,
Sep 2010Varmint and deer .243?
September 10th, 2010
I noticed on gunbroker an $1100 .243 DPMS Panther with all the extra goodness for target/varmint shooter. Has a flat top, floated barrel, sniper grip, bipod, etc and I am close to buying it to use for 100 target shooting, varmint hunting, and also deer hunting.
I was thinking about putting good optics and trigger on this gun, do you think it would be a reasonable compromise to to hunt both varmint and deer with the same gun? It makes a lot of sense to me, instead of a .223 that I could not use for deer, or a .30-06 or .308 that would be too expensive for much plinking, and inappropriate for varmint hunting.
I see that a person can get the rounds for about $ .75 each from good brands, but you can get Ballistic Silver Tips (with the wicked chrome shells) for about $1.10 when you’re stalking some trophy bucks. I figure that so long as my optics let me take the shot precisely, shot placement will compensate for caliber.

I am looking for a good affordable 12 gauge pump shotgun for deer hunting. Is there a shotgun on the market that can cover multiple uses? Like defense, hunting, sporting? I want to use slugs for deer hunting but I know that slugs would not be a reasonable home defense ammunition. Any suggestion or advice?

This question was sent via an email so I thought I’d post it here for some of you to answer.. Admin
Hello! I am at the library and we are not allowed to post on blogs, facebook, or forums. I got your blogs invitation email and wanted to ask a few question regarding hunting and fishing. I just turned 16 and I want to start hunting and fishing (more) and have never hunted and only fish maybe once or twice in the summer. My step-father has a new cabin and likes to hunting and fishing alot. He really does not talk about it or provide too much information so and I am looking for information about the different types of guns and equipment for deer hunting. If you could point me to your favorite places on the internet that has a lot of information regarding deer hunting and stuff , that would be great! Also, any advice on firearms for deer hunting and techniques I am all ears. Thanks for all your help ahead of time!
Sep 2010Not a hunter but a stupid question?
September 1st, 2010
Hello all, I am not a hunter or oppose to hunting I just don’t have the opportunity to go and live far from any place you’d be able to hunt. Anyway, my question is, I was watching the outdoor channel, and I see hunters rattling/rubbing deer antlers together. It looked very odd but then minutes (after rattling) a huge buck came running into an open field. Are they attracted to the sound? What makes them do that? A bit confused.. Is this some kind of a mating call? Also, the hunters on the show use terms like: 5 point or 10 point. What does that mean? What is the acceptable points (?) while deer hunting? Also, I see when they get shot they’re still able to take off running for a few feet. How is that possible?
Thanks for the invitation,

Evening all, thank you for the invitation, and yes I do have a question. I first got into hunting going after turkeys and now want to expand to deer hunting and don’t want to use a slug. So, my question is what caliber and rifle is best for hunting whitetail deer and possibly a mule deer? My budget for a new rifle and glass is $600 and will be used primarily used for deer hunting. I’ve been looking at 7mm magnum, . 300 magnum, .308 , and a .243 and what caliber do you think would be best for deer hunting and why?
Aug 2010Cold weather hunting clothes?
August 27th, 2010
Some of the users here might think this question is a bit too early, but heck, anything to do with hunting is always alright to ask. I’ll be deer hunting in Southern Ohio this fall and looking for a set of hunting clothes for the bitter cold that we can get in the fall, it can range from 50-20 or less degrees and want to definitely prepare for the lower temperatures. I’ve learned my lesson last year and was so cold I don’t ever want to go through that AGAIN. I am an avid bow hunter, so anything bulky is out of consideration and my budget is between 200-300$ range.
Thanks All for any advice or a direction to go.
