Remington 700 for deer hunting?
August 11th, 2010
![]() Thanks for the email and I also have a question. I am seriously looking at a remington 700 for varmint hunting and use as my deer hunting rifle. The question is what caliber would be effective for whitetail in fairly heavy brush as well as open fields? Im not looking to shoot over 150 yards but something that will push 300 might be useful for varmints. I am not to worried about the kick (if 308) but would like to be able to use my arm after a bit of practice? Do any of you hunt deer & varmints with a heavy barrel Remington 700?
Thanks Danny in San Jose

Deer hunting for meat only
August 3rd, 2010
![]() I am primarily a bow hunter and I got to that age when things just need to be easier. This year I just want to hunt for venison and not a trophy. I dug through my garage and found my .308 Remington. So my question is what grain and type of round should I use for minimal meat damage? I’d like to reload later down the road as well. My question for this old timer is what would be the preferable setup for my type of hunting? Powder type and amount, primer, bullet, any other variables?
Thanks,
Travis

Pregnant Deer Cam photos
May 17th, 2010
My deer cam pictures show two different woods, two different cameras and in the last two weeks I have numerous pictures of does that look like they will be dropping fawns soon. I always enjoy seeing the wobbly legged fawns on camera. Looked like bumps starting, and possibly velvet on top of them, but the angles weren’t right. In the second woods, there was no doubt. I think this is the same buck, but at 2 different times. Both pictures were this morning. There were some other pictures on this card from a week ago, and 2 weeks ago which appeared to have bucks starting to grow some antlers, but not good enough pictures to verify. The 2 pics i am posting, there is no doubt about it
I am pretty sure I have pictures of this doe with last year’s fawn in tow when the fawn was only a week or less old. Nice to see them doing well, and it looks like she is going to have a sibling or two to join the family. This old doe with the black nose is unmistakable. She was on camera last year a couple times, then avoided it like the plague. Not as apprehensive with the Pregnant Deer Cam photos Never saw her from the stand. She would be a great trophy. Wise old girl. I think she had twins last year. This is what we all like to see!!! I think the two in velvet are the same buck at two different times. Slightly different position on the camera. Wouldn’t hurt my feelings if it is 2 different deer, but I think it is the same one. May 2010
