Hey all I am another who got an email about this blog answering questions for new hunters. I got into to turkey hunting this year as an invited guest to a farm and just fell for it. The shotgun I used was the land owners and thought I’d ask here on the type of shotgun to use for future turkey hunts. I’m am thinking a Semi-auto shotgun for Turkey hunting and looking for something affordable for a hunter that has a big family to feed ie., cheap;-), but reliable. Any ideas on what type of calls I should get and any good web sites to buy from?
Regards, Terry

My preference is a Benelli for turkeys, they make a great line of turkey guns! You don’t really need an auto-loader for turkeys. If u shoot the head bird, they will stick around. For turkey hunting, the best kind of calls are usually slate calls.
I never used a semi-auto shotgun for turkey because i’ve always done well with an over-under and never needed a followup shot in a hurry. But if I were to buy one that is affordable a mossberg 500 with real tree camo, about 400 bucks, but super reliable, it’s not semi, but you rarely need to make a second shot with turkeys, and pump actions are more reliable, semis break down often. My son uses a mossberg in the woods and it performs beautifully, you need to get a special XXF choke tube to take turkeys at farther ranges then with a normal full choke, the choke will cost ya $30 bucks, but well worth it.
I am no help when it comes to calls, but a scatter gun is a different story. In Turkey hunting you are looking for 1 good head shot. Do you really need a 3 shot semi-auto? I don’t think so. I would just buy a break open single shot for less than $200.Why spend hundreds more if you don’t have to?
Pass shooting at Geese or Ducks is a different story then you need a little firepower.
The stoger 2000 (camo) has been voted the best buy for semi auto shotguns. Made by benelli who is owned by Beretta. Both fine gun companies. Turkey calls you can get anywhere.
