I am against canned hunts
September 2nd, 2010
![]() I am not vegan or anything like that, but I am against killing game (canned hunts) just for the sake of killing them. I come from a long line of hunters in my family, but I recently heard my own father and brother purchased a deer from a company that lets the animal loose on a fenced property so that they can be hunted later. The ranch property owners actually feed the Deer/Buck and wait until it matures to a certain or “trophy deer” size later to be hunted by my father or brother!
Come on what kind of hunting is that? That has nothing to do with fair-chase or what most hunters and people would think as part of the hunting tradition. I though hunting was about preparation, understanding the woods and environment, how to harvest your game, and most important the thrill of the hunt in an all natural surrounding?
What’s has our tradition and world come too?

Not a hunter but a stupid question?
September 1st, 2010
Hello all, I am not a hunter or oppose to hunting I just don’t have the opportunity to go and live far from any place you’d be able to hunt. Anyway, my question is, I was watching the outdoor channel, and I see hunters rattling/rubbing deer antlers together. It looked very odd but then minutes (after rattling) a huge buck came running into an open field. Are they attracted to the sound? What makes them do that? A bit confused.. Is this some kind of a mating call? Also, the hunters on the show use terms like: 5 point or 10 point. What does that mean? What is the acceptable points (?) while deer hunting? Also, I see when they get shot they’re still able to take off running for a few feet. How is that possible?
Thanks for the invitation,

Over the years I see less and less youth in the field hunting or any outdoor sports for that matter. Their only interest now is PS3 or internet related popularity like facebook or myspace. When I was a kid you could not get me out of the woods and I learned a lot about how nature life works in balance. Now, most kids don’t even want to leave the house or even communicate/inter act with family. Most would be known as the “fat kid” when compared to when I was growing up as youth. Since there is less and less people doing outdoor sports, what are some ways I can get/convince kids and other people to go hunting and pick up different outdoor sports such as, camping and fishing? Winchester or Ruger hunting rifle?
August 30th, 2010
Ruger Model 77 Mark II Frontier Or a Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow I can’t decide on these two rifles to buy as my new deer hunting rifle. The Winchester is a 7mm Mag & the Ruger 7mm-08.
Both rifles are used but in great shape and look and function new ie., clean bore and all and priced to buy right now! I am trying to decide which one is best all around. Which one has less of a kick back on firing? Which one has more of a clean kill on hunting game? These rifles would be scoped of course, and also used on long range targets.
Thanks in Advance

Evening all, thank you for the invitation, and yes I do have a question. I first got into hunting going after turkeys and now want to expand to deer hunting and don’t want to use a slug. So, my question is what caliber and rifle is best for hunting whitetail deer and possibly a mule deer? My budget for a new rifle and glass is $600 and will be used primarily used for deer hunting. I’ve been looking at 7mm magnum, . 300 magnum, .308 , and a .243 and what caliber do you think would be best for deer hunting and why?
Thanks all

Cold weather hunting clothes?
August 27th, 2010
Some of the users here might think this question is a bit too early, but heck, anything to do with hunting is always alright to ask. I’ll be deer hunting in Southern Ohio this fall and looking for a set of hunting clothes for the bitter cold that we can get in the fall, it can range from 50-20 or less degrees and want to definitely prepare for the lower temperatures. I’ve learned my lesson last year and was so cold I don’t ever want to go through that AGAIN. I am an avid bow hunter, so anything bulky is out of consideration and my budget is between 200-300$ range. Thanks All for any advice or a direction to go. Gary |
